Hello readers. I'm sorry about my lack of posts over the last year. Here is something you might find interesting. A few weeks ago I read of an October sighting of a squatch in a neighboring county, so my son and I went to check out the area. I hope this blog post helps people realize just how wild some areas of Georgia are.

We started from Statenville and made our way up to Homerville. The area is both remote and untamed; there are lots of woods, ponds and swampy areas.

Georgians Enter the Woods at Your Own Risk...

I sometimes drop my guard and mention to folks that I have a Bigfoot website. After an awkward pause, they usually ask me why I decided to start Squatchology. While I have always been a Bigfoot enthusiast, I decided to start paying more attention to the subject when I came across an article about the Elkins Creek Bigfoot cast. This casting of a Bigfoot track surprised me because it was taken within 30 minutes of my home in LaGrange, Georgia. The track measured 17.5" long by 8.5" wide and is considered a very impressive print due its dermal ridge patterns.

Prior to reading about the Elkins Creek cast, I had never thought about the existence of Bigfoot in Georgia. Like most people, I thought Bigfoot's domain was limited to the Pacific Northwest, Louisiana bayous, and Florida swamps. My newfound curiousity lead me to search the Internet for other Georgia Squatch sitings. I was surprised to see just how many Bigfoot sightings there are in the Peach State. There are even some sitings in my own county, Troup county. Here is a list of some of my favortes; the first three are virtually in my backyard:

Troup County -Six- to seven-foot Squatch seen wandering around West Point Lake.
Troup County - Squatch scares daylights out of man and dog alike.
Heard County - Squatch spotted near Yellow Jacket Creek.
Fannin County - A Squatch family of three is witnessed by U.S. soldiers rummaging through the charred remains of a helicopter crash.

A quick perusal of the internet will lead you to a number of interesting Georgia Bigfoot stories. Here is another interesting story I found related to Troup County:

North Troup County: 1955 or 1956, Bigfoot Eyes a Hog

Moving 20 miles west and just south of the Heard County line, on Ringer Road, a young boy on his way to feed his family's hog spotted what he described as a "bigfoot type creature." With "long, light brownish hair all over its body" the creature appeared eight feet tall to the boy. His brother, while not seeing the creature, confirmed seeing strange large four-toed tracks near the family's hog pen. According to the brothers, a neighbor of theirs had said he had shot at the bigfoot more than once with his 30-30 rifle. This same older man, they said, called the creature a "`bung-a-dingo.'" How he and other neighbors, who had also seen the 4-500 pound entity, arrived at this peculiar name in not known. While no other bigfoot sightings have been documented in Troup County. Other bigfoot sightings in years past have occurred elsewhere in the THC.(SOURCE)

While it would be incredibly interesting to have evidence of an actual Bigfoot, don't expect it tomorrow. According to the BFRO, it is simply a hoax perpetrated by a couple of Georgia yokels. The ring leader of this effort, Tom Biscardi, is expected to be discredited beyond repair. Read the BFRO's opinion of the situation here.

2007 Bigfoot Sighting in Whitfield County, Georgia

Last week I was up in north Georgia visiting family. While we were there, my son and I went to check out a Bigfoot sighting area near Dalton, Georgia. This site was of particular interest to me since I am from the area--my hometown, Ringgold, is only about 20 miles from the site. Here is the sighting report as reported to the Bigfoot Field Research Organization. It is interesting to note that this sighting is categorized as a "Class A" sighting--meaning that someone "actually" saw the squatch.

Observations and Comments:

I had a hard time seeing 30 yards from the bridge due to the thick vegetation along the river bank. The river actually looks like a modest creek. The report claims to have seen a fallen tree 200 yards away; that is a long way. My view was nothing like the one described in the sighting report.
The area was a creek bed densely covered with vegetation; the area would be an excellent place to hide. I decided not to park my car and walk in the area since I had my son with me. Actually, the thought of walking alone there did not interest me either.
I did not get and walk on the bridge due to the traffic on the road. I would not say that the area is congested, but it certainly is not a desolate, rural road. Another problem was the fact that there was not turn around area or good parking spots near the river. There were some farm roads right near the river, but I was afraid my car might bottom out on those roads.
The site sits right on the Whitfield-Murray county line. Looking in the direction of Murray county you can see Fort Mountain; this is a rustic, wilderness area. Fort Mountain State Park is nearby. Most people, myself included, often do not realize how much "wild" area there still is in Georgia.
I will try to get back to the area this fall and take some pictures.

In Bigfoot's Backyard

This summer I have read a lot about Bigfoot sightings in my home state of Georgia. In June I decided to check out Rood Creek Park (photos), the location of a sighting in August of 2000. As I expected, Rood Creek Park is a remote location very similar to the bayous of Louisiana. The park is located next to a government wildlife preserve that is off limits. Check out some of the photos my wife took of the area.

Comments and Observations:

Stewart County is a very rustic area full of forests, swamps, and the Chattahoochee River. Many city dwellers would be surprised to see just how remote parts of Georgia really are.
As we drove out to the park on a rural dirt road, it was about 5:30. I couldn't help but think that it would be a horrible place to have car trouble.
There was a Bigfoot sighting in Stewart County in June of 2008. Sorry I missed Mr. Squatch!

Here goes another blog about something that really interests me--Bigfoot, Squatch, etc. Whatever you want to call them, they sure are interesting. Either we have a huge primate wandering North America, or there is a massive case of hysteria taking place here.

Over the summer I have been reading about Squatch sitings in my home state of Georgia. I have come across a number of interesting sites, articles and cases. Check out some of these sites:

West Central Georgia Bigfoot Investigation - This site caught my eye because it deals with sightings in Talbot county...a county about a 30-minute drive from my home! Read some this site's investigations; make sure you check out the pictures of the Squatch lair (links at bottom of the page).
The Georgia Swamp Ape Research Center - Site under development, but there are some useful articles.
Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Organization - A great site concentrating on Bigfoot sightings from Texas to Florida. Check out the recent reports.
